A Movie Recommendation for Memorial Day Weekend

Allow me to anticipate a question – why are you sending me a movie recommendation for the upcoming holiday weekend?

A couple of reasons….

Beyond the usual barbeques and sporting events on TV (hoping Rafael Nadal’s 38-year-old body can propel him to a 15th and final French Open tennis championship), I’d like to offer up another fun, enjoyable diversion, and….

As many of you know, I admit to being an avid “classic” film watcher, and in my decidedly amateur opinion, I feel that the best movie ever made that honestly and frankly deals with war and its after effects on those who serve is…..more on that in a few more sentences!

As the 176th Memorial Day approaches, let us first take a moment to honor and remember the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. This special day, started in 1868, is a solemn reminder of the cost of the freedom we enjoy today. Proquility encourages you to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this day and to honor the heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

And with all due respect, I’d humbly suggest two ways to do just that.

First, the next time you see a soldier in uniform, or learn of a veteran’s service to our country, try to do something for them in the moment that shows your appreciation beyond a sincere “thank you.” Maybe quietly pick up the tab for the meal they’re eating. Or exchange your better airline seat with the help of the gate agent. Perhaps ask your veterinarian to send you the bill for the next veteran who brings their beloved pet in for treatment that they have a difficult time affording.

Second, track down a film called “The Best Years of Our Lives.” It is currently available through Amazon Prime and Peacock streaming services. If you don’t subscribe to those, it is well worth the 5 to 10 bucks it will cost you to buy or rent. If you’ve already seen it, watch it again. And if you don’t feel it was worth your time and hard-earned funds, I will reimburse you!

“The Best Years of Our Lives” profoundly captures the experiences of returning World War II veterans in a poignant, realistic portrayal of the challenges faced by soldiers reintegrating into civilian life after serving and sacrificing in the war. I’ll warn you in advance – this is a black and white film, it runs 170 minutes long, and you will be greatly touched by the characters it portrays. Have plenty of tissues handy.

If you get the opportunity to watch, either this weekend or in the future, please send me a quick e-mail and let me know what you thought…..and whether I owe you $5-10!

Next month I will return with thoughts more related to planning and investing. Until then, thank you for joining Proquility in paying tribute to those who have given so much for our country. We wish you a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.
